God claims the government workplace as His own, just like every other workplace. Throughout history, Godly men and women in government have recognized that prayer is the most powerful strategy Christians have for political impact. Praying for our nation’s leaders and public servants is every Christian’s responsibility toward those working in government, whether municipal, state, or national.
The following Scripture passages help focus our prayers for our leaders, every civil servant, and the government workplace in general.
1 Timothy 2:1-4
First of all, then, I urge that entreaties and prayers, petitions and thanksgivings, be made on behalf of all men, for kings and all who are in authority, so that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and dignity. This is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.
We pray that You would help our leaders to govern wisely. Draw those who do not know You to Jesus and those who know You to rest in Your power and purpose for their lives. Bring them emotional stability, mental clarity, and physical endurance to do their work. Regardless of their faith, please bestow upon them Your common grace and strength to effectively carry out their responsibilities to preserve peace and tranquility in the land so that Your people may flourish and the gospel may spread unhindered throughout the land.
Romans 13:1-5 (see also 1 Peter 2:13-14)
Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. … For he is God's servant to do you good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword for nothing. He is God's servant, an agent of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer. Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also because of conscience.
Father, thank you for every public servant involved in governing our cities, our states, and our country. Help them to see that they are Your servants first and foremost. And please empower us as citizens to give them the respect due their office whether or not we agree with their political positions.
Give our leaders grace to do justly, love mercy, and walk humbly before You in all integrity. May they defend the oppressed, protect the virtuous, and discipline wrongdoers. Please give them to wisdom to enact laws and regulations that foster an environment where every citizen can flourish spiritually, socially, and physically.
This is also why you pay taxes, for the authorities are God's servants, who give their full time to governing.
Father,You are the Just Administrator. We pray for those who collect taxes and manage budgets to understand the value of their work before You. Show them that they are functioning as nothing less than Your servants, carrying out Your purposes for the wellbeing of every citizen. Keep them from abusing their power or exploiting their position for anything other than fairly collecting and managing taxes for the common good of all citizens. May they do their work well and as an act of service to You.
Render to all what is due them: tax to whom tax is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honor to whom honor. Owe nothing to anyone except to love one another; for he who loves his neighbor has fulfilled the law.
When our government leaders and civil servants pursue evil and abuse their power, lead them to humility and repentance. Empower those serving in government who love You to stand up for what is right and speak truth in love, no matter the consequences.
While exercising our responsibilities as citizens to speak up for righteousness and stand up against evil, teach us how to honor and pay our debt of love toward those with whom we disagree. Keep far from us, rebellious attitudes and hateful and snarky speech, unbecoming of a child of God. May no critical word leave our mouths that has not been spoken humbly before Your throne as we pray fervently for those who serve in government. But when policies and laws violate Your will, help us to humbly disobey them and commit our wellbeing into your hands as we wholeheartedly obey You.
But at the end of that period, I, Nebuchadnezzar, raised my eyes toward heaven and my reason returned to me, and I blessed the Most High and praised and honored Him who lives forever; For His dominion is an everlasting dominion, And His kingdom endures from generation to generation. All the inhabitants of the earth are accounted as nothing, But He does according to His will in the host of heaven And among the inhabitants of earth; And no one can ward off His hand or say to Him, “What have You done?”
Thank you, God, for seeing every act, hearing every word, and knowing every motive of every person. There is no unspoken thought, no political payoff, no back-room deal, no hidden motive which escapes Your notice. You are the all-knowing, perfect, and righteous judge. We acknowledge that many times those whom we have placed in authority reject You and seek to establish their own rule and power. For those who use their authority for evil or selfish gain, we pray for their repentance, humbly acknowledging our own need of grace. Like King Nebuchadnezzar, may we all see the error of our ways, turn to You for forgiveness, and live righteously.
Seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile, and pray to the LORD on its behalf; for in its welfare you will have welfare.
Lord, You are the source of all wisdom. We pray that you would impart your wisdom to our government leaders, that they may pursue “the welfare of the city”– the good of every citizen.
But Lord, we acknowledge that in America we share this responsibility with our rulers. Give us all the wisdom of Solomon to provide equal opportunity for everyone to succeed in their work, reach their goals, and pursue their dreams. May we work tirelessly to untangle the many social issues which plague our society. Give us wisdom and the ability to work together with men and women of opposing political persuasions to seek the welfare of our cities, states, and country
The king's heart is like channels of water in the hand of the LORD; He turns it wherever He wishes.
Lord, thank You for Your dominion and reign over every living thing and over the entire universe. There is not one square inch of creation over which you do not cry, “Mine! This belongs to me” Nor is there any ruler’s heart beyond Your reach. We ask for You to accomplish Your divine will through the leaders of our country, states and cities, no matter their commitment to follow You. Lord, turn their hearts to accomplish Your will, even the most self-serving. And whoever our leaders may be, we ask You to turn their hearts so that Your Kingdom come, Your will be done,on earth--in our country, states, and cities--as it is in heaven.
